In May, a Model 3 driver complained that the “car steering felt stuck and slid off the road, which resulted in crashing into a tree.
In June, a driver in Alpharetta, Georgia, reported that a two-week-old Tesla Model Y was leaving a mall when “the steering wheel abruptly did not steer. The alert was hard to miss. went extremely close to the opposing lane of traffic and managed to cross the street inside the mall somehow.
A request for comment from Tesla was not immediately complied with.
This is the first stage of a formal investigation to see if the problem constitutes an excessive risk to safety. Before requesting a recall, NHTSA would need to escalate the probe to an engineering analysis.
